Education Wife Assault/Springtide Resources

Education Wife Assault has changed its name to Springtide Resources: Ending Violence against Women. They state: "Springtide Resources promotes healthy and equal relationships by engaging diverse communities in shared educational strategies designed to prevent violence against women and the effect it has on children.”

Springtide has agreed to sponsor future work on the impact of violence on learning. As part of the launch of Too Scared to Learn a benefit concert raised awareness of the impact of violence on learning and almost $1,000 towards the next project. In 2006 Springtide became the lead partner on a project to promote knowledge exchange through the website www.learningandviolence.net.


On the Screen
Janet Isserlis created 'On the Screen' as part of a National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) fellowship focussing on violence and learning. Janet stated that her project was: "to provide adult literacy workers and learners opportunities to link research and practice in a year long study of the prevalence and effects of violence in the lives of adult learners and educators." She hoped to "place the effects of trauma on learning 'on the screen' of those who do the work of adult literacy learning and teaching so that trauma itself as a barrier to learning can be addressed in meaningful ways leading to improved learning opportunities for women."


Hot Peach Pages
Hot Peach Pages contain resource information on violence and abuse. In Saskatchewan the pages are in the front of all telephone directories. Information on resources in many other parts of the world are available on the internet.

Stardale
On their website Stardale is described as: "a learning and healing center for Aboriginal women and women of poverty... which serves the communities in Northern Saskatchewan." Their mission is "to provide life skills and literacy education, as well as advocacy to women living in poverty and abusive situations, toward empowering their lives, their families, and their communities, thus overcoming systemic barriers." They say: "we strive to provide, in our Center in Melfort, a special place which safeguards for the clients' safety and comfort in expressing their feelings, past experiences, traumas and hurts within the confines of a friendly and caring environment that respects their individuality and freedom of thought."


Literacy Resources Rhode Island

Janet Isserlis is also responsible for creating the Literacy Resources/Rhode Island site at Brown University. It is an eclectic site with a wide range of interesting resources. Canadian Congress for Learning Opportunities for Women

The Canadian Congress for Learning Opportunities for Women describes itself as "a national, feminist organization dedicated to addressing education and training issues for girls and women. Our vision is women's social, political and economic equality through expanded learning opportunities. Key focus areas are literacy, equity in education and job training."

CCLOW sponsored my work on trauma and learning from 1996 ­ 1999.


The Centre for Literacy of Quebec.

The Centre for Literacy describes itself as "committed to supporting and improving literacy practices in schools, community and workplace. It is dedicated to increasing public understanding of the changing definition of literacy in a changing society." AlphaPlus

Alphaplus describes itself as: "information and resource specialists in adult literacy and second language acquisition." Alphaplus resources include a library collection, newsletter, AlphaPlus Index to Web resources and a new Web-based adult literacy curriculum. The Alphacom electronic discussion system provides a place for discussions by literacy practitioners and learners.

The 1998 on-line seminar based on the But I'm Not a Therapist Discussion Paper is archived under discussions: Literacy and Violence Archives. More recently Priscilla George moderated a discussion called: Impacts of Trauma on Learning. This discussion was intended to generate discussion about the issue prior to the CCLOW congress in March 2000. To find these discussions click on Alphacom, then Alphacom Discussions and register. Both discussions can be found under English Public discussions.


LINCS

LINCS is a U.S. based site which is part of "the National Institute for Literacy's (NIFL's) comprehensive electronic communication and information system." They describe it as: "the literacy community's gateway to the world of adult education and literacy resources on the Internet."

Women Leading Through Reading

"Women Leading Through Reading is an initiative with a twofold purpose: to raise awareness about the particular challenges women face as they seek to enhance their literacy skills, and to explore alternative ways for women to improve their literacy skills."

This site includes a wonderful resource list of "women-centered accessible materials." Click on the box half-way down the page to check out this ever-growing list.


NALD – National Adult Literacy Database

The National Adult Literacy Database Inc. (NALD) is a federally incorporated, non-profit service organization which fills the crucial need for a single-source, comprehensive, up-to-date and easily accessible database of adult literacy programs, resources, services and activities across Canada. It also links with other services and databases in North America and overseas.

NALD site includes a selection of full articles, information on many publications and newsletters and hosts websites for many literacy organizations, (including CCLOW).


Literacy and Numeracy Studies Journal

This international journal "focuses on the many and complex ways that language, literacy and numeracy are implicated in adult life." It includes a wide range of interesting articles about literacy and numeracy education. It would be a great place to submit articles about trauma and learning - information about how to submit articles is include in the website!
